Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie skydiving into new experiences or a Zen master seeking the perfect sunset for your evening meditation, Koh Phangan is your jam.

  • Beaches: Oh boy, the beaches! From the rave-tastic Haad Rin to the secluded charm of Bottle Beach, you’ll find your perfect stretch of sand for your vibe.
  • Food: Forget Pad Thai (just kidding, Pad Thai is LIFE); this place is a culinary Disneyland. From spicy curries to fresh seafood, your taste buds will be doing the Macarena.
  • Activities: Whether it’s scuba diving with Nemo, jungle trekking with Tarzan, or finding your inner peace at a yoga retreat, you’re sorted.
Beach bar on Koh Phangan

We’ve been to Koh Phangan more times than we’ve lost our sunglasses, and each visit has been nothing short of magical. Samara visited first as a solo traveler many moons ago when we first met. She spent a week exploring the island’s nooks and crannies on her own terms.

The experience was so transformative that we then returned for our honeymoon and a few times since. Yep, you read that right. The island’s romantic sunsets and intimate beaches were the perfect backdrop for celebrating our love. And now? We’re planning a trip back, but this time as a family. We can’t wait to introduce our little one to the wonders of Koh Phangan.

The stats don't lie

Need more convincing? How about some cold, hard facts? Tourism in Koh Phangan has been on a steady rise, with a whopping 1.2 million visitors in the last year alone. And here’s the kicker: 80% of these tourists were repeat visitors. Clearly, the island is doing something right and we’re not the only ones addicted.

Beyond the Full Moon Party

Sure, the Full Moon Party is legen… wait for it… dairy, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Koh Phangan is also the stage for a bunch of other festivals and events. Yoga retreats? Check. Electronic music fests? Double-check. So if you’re not into painting yourself neon and dancing till dawn, no worries. There’s a whole other island to explore.

How to get to Koh Phangan

So, you’re sold on Koh Phangan and can’t wait to dip your toes in its turquoise waters. You’re ready to swap your office chair for a hammock and your coffee for a coconut. But wait, there’s a tiny detail we need to sort out—how the heck do you get there?

Chill, I’ve got your back. Whether you’re coming from the bustling streets of Bangkok or another Thai island, we’ll guide you through the journey.

Where is Koh Phangan

First off, let’s get our bearings straight. Koh Phangan is snuggled in the Gulf of Thailand, playing middle child between its Insta-famous siblings, Koh Samui and Koh Tao. It’s part of the Surat Thani Province, which means it’s pretty accessible from all over Thailand.

How to Travel from Bangkok to Koh Phangan

Ah, the age-old question: how to travel from Bangkok to Koh Phangan? You’ve got options, my friend. Let’s break it down:

By air

The quickest route to paradise by air. Fly into Koh Samui Airport, and then it’s just a ferry ride away to Koh Phangan. The whole shebang can take as little as 4 hours.

Pro tip: check out all our insider info on how to find cheap flights!

By train

If you’re the “it’s about the journey, not the destination” type, then the train is your spirit animal. Take a scenic ride from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then hop on a bus to the pier and a ferry to Koh Phangan. The train ride alone can be a 12-hour affair, so pack some snacks and a good book.

By bus and ferry

On a shoestring budget? No problemo! A bus and ferry combo is your golden ticket. You’ll bus it from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then ferry over to Koh Phangan. The whole adventure can take between 10 to 14 hours.

So there you have it, our travel-savvy friend. Whether you’re flying high or riding the rails, Koh Phangan is just a hop, skip, and a ferry away.

How to Get Around Koh Phangan

Alright, you’ve made it to Koh Phangan. High five! But hold up, how do you go from sipping coconut water on that Insta-worthy beach to munching on street food from that market you’ve heard so much about? Don’t sweat it; we’ve got the 411 on how to get around Koh Phangan.

Scooter Rentals

The most popular way to explore Koh Phangan is by scooter (and by far the most fun). We spend hours and hours on a scooter exploring this island and it has to be one of the most memorable parts of our Thailand trips.

This island is PERFECT for renting a scooter – not too big you’ll get super lost but not too small so you’ll have plenty to see.

Renting a scooter gives you the freedom to roam the island at your own pace. Whether you’re heading to a secluded beach or a hidden waterfall, a scooter will get you there in no time.

Pro tip: For the best deals on scooter rentals, hit up the shops near the ferry piers. Just make sure you’re comfortable driving on two wheels as the roads can get windy and go from paved to gravel without warning.

Bicycle Rentals

If you’re all about that green life (hello our eco traveler friends!)or want to get your exercise in, bicycles are your jam. They’re perfect for short hops and flat terrains, but maybe not your best bet for conquering the island’s hilly landscape.

Pro Tip: Many hotels and guesthouses are in on the bicycle game. Just ask at the front desk for rates and availability.

Walking

Good old-fashioned walking is always an option, especially if you’re staying in a busy area like Haad Rin or Thong Sala. Many attractions, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance, making it convenient and cost-effective.

Taxis and Songthaews

thai bus, thailand bus
A Thai Songthaew

For longer distances or when you’re carrying beach gear, taxis and songthaews (shared taxis) are available. They’re more expensive than scooters or bicycles but offer the comfort of a car ride. We would typically take this when we were transferring from our hotel to the pier when we have all our luggage.

Pro Tip: Always agree on a fare before you jump in to avoid that awkward “Wait, how much?!” moment.

So, whether you’re a thrill-seeker zipping around on a scooter or a chill traveler pedaling your way through, Koh Phangan offers a range of options to suit your travel style.

Best time to visit Koh Phangan

So you’re all set to explore Koh Phangan, but you’re scratching your head wondering when to go. Timing is everything, especially when you’re planning an island getaway. Let’s dive into the best times to visit Koh Phangan, so you can make the most of your trip.

Koh Phangan weather

First off, let’s talk climate. Koh Phangan is all about that tropical, “sweat it out while you’re standing still” kind of weather. Koh Phangan has a tropical, highly humid climate, which means you can expect warm weather year-round.  However, there are distinct seasons that could influence your travel plans.

  • Cool and dry season: December to March – deemed the best time to visit, you will have moderate temperatures where every day is the perfect “beach day”.
  • Hot season: April to June – just expect to be covered in water. If it’s not from sweat, it’s from rain. Scorching hot temps and some days of light rainfall are on the menu.
  • Rainy season: September to November days are cooler and a whole lot wetter.

Pro Tip: If you’re all about that sun-kissed life, aim for the hot season. But if you’re cool with a few raindrops and want a more chill atmosphere, the rainy season is kinda like the island’s best-kept secret.

Rain on Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan restaurants

Our favorite topic: food! Koh Phangan isn’t just a feast for the eyes; it’s a culinary paradise too. From local Thai dishes to international cuisines, the island has something to tickle every taste bud.

Must try local dishes

When in Koh Phangan, you’ve got to dive into the local food scene. You haven’t visited until you’re leaving with a food baby. Here are some of our must trys:

  • Pad Thai: The OG of Thai cuisine and an absolute classic that can’t be missed. Enjoying this classic stir-fried noodle dish with shrimp or tofu is our fav.
  • Green curry: Creamy, spicy, and everything nice. It’s the Thai comfort food you didn’t know you needed. Trust us, it’s one of our favorite things to eat.
  • Mango sticky rice: A sweet treat made of glutinous rice, fresh mango, and coconut milk.
  • Kiwi shakes: We’re not kidding, we could live off these.

Our personal favorites

We’ve had the pleasure of dining at some fantastic spots on the island, and here are a few we can’t recommend enough:

  • 360 Bar: Offers an epic panoramic view of the island along with a diverse menu and yummy boozy popsicles.
  • Chana Masala Indian Restaurant: Kick off your flip-flops and get comfy. The Indian food here is so good, you’ll want to sit cross-legged and savor every bite.

  • Amsterdam Bar: It’s not just a bar; it’s an experience. With its hilltop location, it offers one of the best sunset views on the island. And the food? Just as heavenly.

Things to do in Koh Phangan

Sure, Koh Phangan is famous for its Full Moon Party, but let’s not put all our eggs in one basket. The island is a treasure trove of activities, sights, and experiences that go beyond the moonlit beaches. So, what’s on the menu? Let’s dive in.

Best Beaches in Koh Phangan

Go scuba diving or snorkeling

As you know, scuba diving and snorkeling (or really any time spent in the water) is our jam. We’re always going to recommend an epic scuba diving adventure when we can but the waters in Koh Phangan are GREAT to explore.

In fact, we think it’s some of the best scuba diving in the world.

If you’re new to diving, this is a great place to get your PADI scuba certification. If you’re looking to upgrade to your Advanced Open Water Diver, this scuba tour is for you. Or if you just want to have some fun on a dive, you can do that here too.

If you want a truly epic diving experience, take a snorkel day trip to nearby Koh Tao which is famous for it’s underwater conditions. We actually got scuba certified in Koh Tao so the diving here is extra sentimental for us.

Take a dip in a waterfall

They say don’t go chasin’ waterfalls but we’re here to give the exact opposite advice. The waterfall scene in Koh Phangan is great! We highly recommend a trip into the Thai jungle to splash in some fresh water. Here are our fav waterfalls:

  • Than Sadet Waterfall: A secluded waterfall that’s perfect for a refreshing dip.
  • Nam Tok Phaeng: Located inside a national park, this waterfall is a great place for hiking with a nice spot to cool down.

Indulge in a Thai temple

We love jumping into the culture everywhere we visit. Visiting temples is one of the best things to do in Thailand and should definitely be one of your must visits. While Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew is the most well known, Koh Phangan has some pretty great places to visit too.

Our favorites are:

  • Wat Phu Khao Noi: The oldest temple on the island, offering panoramic views.
  • Shrine of Our Lady Guanyin: A multi-armed goddess statue that’s a must-see.

Catch the sunset at an epic island viewpoint

  • Khao Ra: The highest point on the island, perfect for hiking and panoramic views.
  • Koh Raham Peninsula: Offers stunning views of Haad Son and the surrounding areas.
  • 360 Bar: We’ve already talked about this place but seriously, it’s worth a second mention! You’ll have to drive up a seriously steep hill to get here but once you do the views are to die for!

Jungle adventures

We love a good adventure and with the lush jungle in Koh Phangan, getting lost in the bush is an absolute must! We went quadding on an ATV in the jungle in Koh Phangan and still talk about how much fun it was.

Safety Tips

Let’s talk safety, folks. While Koh Phangan is generally a safe destination, it’s always better to be prepared than sorry. So, what should you keep in mind to ensure a smooth, worry-free trip? Let’s dive in.

Is Koh Phangan safe?

In a nutshell, yes. Koh Phangan has a relatively low crime rate, especially when compared to other tourist destinations. However, like any place that draws crowds, it’s not entirely devoid of risks. Petty crimes like pickpocketing can happen, especially in crowded areas or during big events like the Full Moon Party.

General safety tips

  • Stay hydrated: The tropical climate can be unforgiving. Always carry water with you.
  • Secure your belongings: Use lockers or safes provided by your accommodation.
  • Get travel insurance: Ever since we got really bad food poisoning in Koh Phi Phi that landed us in the hospital, we have been huge advocates for travel insurance. Never travel without it! Make sure it covers medical emergencies and theft.

Water safety

Swim in designated areas: Not all beaches have lifeguards. Stick to areas marked safe for swimming. And speaking of swimming – watch out for jellyfish! We met some friends who got stung by jellys when swimming at the beach.

Nightlife safety

  • Drink responsibly: Know your limits and always keep an eye on your drink.
  • Safe transportation: Plan how you’ll get back to your accommodation. Avoid poorly lit areas and always opt for reputable taxi services.
